August is in full swing. The sun is still shining brightly, temperatures are still soaring... and dogs are facing real challenges. Because while summer rhymes with holidays and freedom, it also means stress, heat, changes in routine, and even digestive problems or dehydration.
We're checking in with Éric Charles, our veterinary doctor, about dogs' main needs in summer — and how to meet them, while keeping them happy.
What surprises does summer hold for our dogs?
Summer can disrupt the daily lives of dogs, even the most robust ones. And even more so for puppies, elderly or sensitive dogs. Among the most frequent situations:
-
High heat: it exhausts, curbs appetite, impairs digestion and increases the risk of heatstroke.
-
Travel and routine changes: trips, kennels, crowds, unfamiliar environments... This can generate significant stress, or even behavioural or eating disorders.
-
Dehydration: exacerbated by physical activity, car journeys, or simply drinking less. It affects all dogs, even those who seem fit.
-
Noisy events (fireworks, festivals, local celebrations...): often sources of stress or panic.
In short: in summer, we don't give up! And we try to support our doggy's physical and emotional well-being.
So, what can you do to ease your dog's summer?
There are several simple and effective ways to help your dog better cope with the hot season:
-
Provide shaded areas and cool spaces in the house or garden.
-
Adjust walking times (avoid the hottest hours, prefer walks early in the morning or in the evening).
-
Ensure constant hydration, by leaving clean, fresh water available wherever they go.
-
Offer calm activities: licking mats, enrichment toys, massages or gentle exercises.
-
Limit sources of stress as much as possible, or offer reassuring anchoring moments after a change or agitation.
-
Adapt their diet according to the season, activity and sensitivity of the animal.
It's these little attentions that, combined, allow your dog to get through the summer with more comfort and serenity.
The Delamour philosophy: making them happy through nutrition
At Delamour, we designed our products primarily as moments of pleasure, but also as a wellness solution, designed to support dogs in every season.
